Cite a blog post in MLA 9 using the following structure:

Author’s surname and initials. “Post Title.” Name of the blog, Publisher (add this information only if it is different from the name of the blog site), date of the blog post’s publication, and URL. The title of the column or section (if applicable).

The following is how the preceding example would be quoted in MLA 9:

Michele Kirschenbaum. “10 Ways to Identify Fake News Articles.” EasyBib, https://www.easybib.com/guides/10-ways-to-spot-a-fake-news-article/, 4 January 2017.

The following example illustrates how the preceding example might be mentioned in an in-text citation:

(Last Name of Author)

(Kirschenbaum)

Cite a blog post in APA 7 using the following structure:

Author’s surname and initials. (An article about the Year, Month, and Day was published). The post’s title. Blog title. Blog URL.

The following is how the preceding example would be referenced in APA:

M. Kirschenbaum (2017, January 4). There are ten techniques to identify a false news item. Blog for EasyBib. https://www.easybib.com/guides/10-ways-to-spot-a-fake-news-article/

In Chicago, blog entries are typically mentioned solely in the text of a project and in the footnotes.

Example:

“In a blog post published on EasyBib’s website on January 4th, 2017, the author discusses many techniques to identify a fake news story….”

Footnote:

“10 Ways to Spot a Fake News Article,” Michele Kirschenbaum, EasyBib (blog), January 4, 2017, /10-ways-to-spot-a-fake-news-article/.

If you utilized the blog post extensively in your project, or if your instructor wants a complete reference in the bibliography, use the following structure:

Author’s surname and given name. “Blog Post Title.” The title of the blog (blog), the date, and the link to the post.

The following is how the above example would be referenced in Chicago:

Michele Kirschenbaum. “10 Ways to Identify Fake News Articles.” /10-ways-to-spot-a-fake-news-article/, EasyBib (blog), January 4, 2017.

3. Endnote or footnote

To reference a website or blog, in that order, including the author, the title of the page or post, the title or owner of the site, and the date it was published. (If you cannot locate one of those, omit it.) Following that, enter the date you saw the item and the website for it (URL). (Do not be concerned with page numbers for online publications; they are frequently absent.)

“How to Make Edible Water Bottles!” Stephanie DIY for Teens, December 1, 2015, http://diyprojectsforteens.com/how-to-make-edible-water-bottles-video-tutorial/, accessed June 13, 2016.

  1. Bambi Turner, “The Ultimate Space Race Quiz,” How Stuff Works, http://science.howstuffworks.com/space-race-quiz.htm, accessed June 13, 2016.
  2. “27 Money Lessons I Learned Before I Turned 27,” Broke Millennial (blog), May 27, 2016, http://brokemillennial.com/2016/05/27/27-things-learned-money-27/, accessed June 13, 2016.

Title of the website: In roman style, capitalize the title of a website: DIY for Teens. If the website refers to itself in this manner (e.ggtime.com, Easel.ly), include the domain ending (.com,.org,.net, etc. ): e.ggtime.com, Easel.ly.

Title of the blog: Italicize the headline of a blog post: Broke Millennial. If the title of a blog does not contain the word “blog,” insert it in parentheses: Broke Millennial (blog).

It is OK to change the capitalization of a title or address to make it simpler to read: WizIQ rather than Wiziq.

4. Bibliography

While including a blog or website in your bibliography is not always required, you should do so (1) if it is one of your primary sources, (2) if you often reference it, or (3) if your teacher requires you to include all of your note sources in the bibliography.

Take note that in bibliographical citations, periods (rather than commas) separate the sections and that when an author’s name is included, the last name appears first.

5. Citation of the author and the date

It is frequently preferable to include a link to a website in the text of your article rather than attempting to fit it into the author-date format (“As of July 19, 2008, the McDonald’s Corporation listed on its website…”). However, if you truly need an author-date citation, go to the samples below. Additionally, keep in mind that websites change often, so note the date you visited (or, if available, a date that the site was last modified). Use the access date or the last-modified date to determine the year of publication.

Google. 2009. “Google Privacy Statement.” March 11th, 2011 http://www.google.com/intl/en/privacypolicy.html.
Citation by author and date: (Google 2009)
McDonald’s Corporation. 2008. “Safety Information for McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys.” Accessed 19 July. http://www.mcdonalds.com/corp/about/factsheets.html.
(McDonald’s 2008)

6. However, what if… there is no author?

Is there no date? If a portion of a reference is just missing, you must omit it. As a note, if the author’s name is not included, begin with the post or page’s title (as in note 3 above). For a bibliographical entry, if there is no author, begin with the website or blog’s name (as in the third bibliography entry above). If no posting date is specified, you may still include the day you viewed it.

Does the author’s name appear to be fabricated? Give the writer’s name exactly as it appears, even if it appears to be a forgery; if you learn the writer’s genuine identity, provide it in brackets: Tattooed Talker [Jennie Samuel].

Is the webpage no longer available after you saw it? It is not your fault that it vanished. Simply provide the URL where you saw it and the date it was seen. (However, it is your responsibility if you did not take note of the URL and the day you viewed it!)

You’re unsure if this is a blog or a website? It may be irrelevant; simply make your best estimate. Bloggers frequently write in the first person (I did this; I did that), and their postings sometimes resemble personal diary entries in a roll, with fresh entries appearing at the top of the screen. Websites often contain several pages; the information may not change frequently, and the articles may not include the author’s name. Individuals frequently maintain blogs, whereas companies maintain web pages.

Is the blog a component of a website? If a blog is a component of a bigger website, include the website’s name after the blog’s title: The Chicago Blog, University of Chicago Press.

How to Properly Cite a Blog in Your Essay

The days of dusty leather-bound library books as the only source of helpful knowledge are long gone, with an increasing amount of relevant academic information being available online. Unfortunately, not all university-style guides have evolved with the times, making it difficult to correctly cite blogs and other internet sources in your bibliography.
