According to OnePlus’s announcement, the two companies’ businesses will “better integrate” one another. However, what does that actually signify?
Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, recently made an announcement regarding the company’s “new journey,” which included a goal to “better merge our organisation with Oppo.” The news was delivered by Lau in the form of a forum post on the OnePlus website, in which he stated, “we’re at a turning point for the future of OnePlus,” and “we must adapt as a team and a brand.”

It appears to be a bold step for OnePlus, the firm that Lau co-founded with Carl Pei after reportedly leaving Oppo in 2013. OnePlus became well-known for its subversive marketing and hype-driven online shopping techniques, which portrayed the company as a more forward-thinking alternative to more established smartphone makers.

IT HAS NEVER BEEN A SECRET THAT ONEPLUS HAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH OPPO.
However, it remained a private firm with ownership tied up in Oppo and the mysterious BBK Electronics empire, and it was obvious from OnePlus’s phones that there were still at least some ties to Oppo. Components like as display panels appeared to be nearly identical, and even purportedly proprietary technology, such as Oppo’s Dash fast-charging mechanism, was compatible with components from other manufacturers.
Three years ago, a representative from OnePlus explained to me that the company and its subsidiary, Oppo, operate fully independently from one another. “Research and development, finances, sales channels, and day-to-day operations, among other areas, function autonomously. Both parties have some investors in common with one another. OnePlus leases Oppo’s production line and shares some of Oppo’s supply chain resources with the company.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has stated that the company will maintain its autonomous operation despite the further merging with Oppo. However, he has not provided any specifics of what exactly will be combined, and considering the extent to which the products of the two brands already have similarities, it is unclear what, if anything, this will actually imply for customers. Lau states that OnePlus will continue to operate its own events and consumer feedback channels, for example. However, he adds that Oppo’s bigger resources should help OnePlus be more efficient with software upgrades.

Over the past few years, it hasn’t exactly been a closely guarded secret that OnePlus and Oppo have been inching closer and closer toward an official reunification. Last year, Lau was promoted to the position of chief product officer at Oppo while continuing in his post at OnePlus. In January, the research and development departments of the two companies were combined. Not so long ago, OnePlus made the announcement that it would begin adopting Oppo’s ColorOS for its phones sold in China.

If one is to read between the lines, it would appear that Oppo will handle OnePlus in essence as if it were one of its labels. OnePlus will continue to run its consumer-facing business independently, while Oppo’s business activities will merge in areas other than product development. Will this result in discernible alterations to OnePlus’s products? Who can say!
